SUGGESTED GOALS FOR EACH LEARNING MODULE
Module #1: Team Building Activities
- Students will work together to build an environment of mutual respect, collaboration, Cooperation and creativity in which the participants feel welcomed, nurtured, and encourage to challenge themselves and others.
Module #2: Leadership
- Students will identify and discuss the qualities and definitions of leadership.
- Students will compare and contrast leadership styles and skills necessary to become an effective leader in today’s world.
- Students will challenge their own and other’s views on leadership.
Module #3: PR/HYLI History
- Students will gain an appreciation for the history of the Angelo Del Toro/Puerto Rican Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute.
- Students will review the objectives and goals of the Institute as well as the goals of the local training sessions.
Module #4: Communication and Public Speaking
- Students will study and practice the skills used in debate that promote the essential democratic values of free and open discussion.
- Students will learn about the fundamental elements of effective public speaking.
Module #5: How a Bill Becomes Law
- Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding of the necessity for establishing governments; the governmental system of the U.S. and other nations; the U.S. Constitution; the basic civic values of American constitutional democracy; and the roles, rights, and responsibilities of citizenship, including avenues of participation.
Module #6: PRHYLI Parliamentary Mock Assembly Procedures
- Students will learn the vocabulary and procedures to conduct a public meeting, a debate, or participate in a mock assembly session.
- Students will use the PR/HYLI Parliamentary Procedures for the practice and the execution of the Mock Assembly. It is important that you distribute the reading material for this module as a homework assignment on day one.
Module #7: Analysis and Study of Bills
- Students will examine the list of bills chosen for debate during the Mock Assembly Session in Albany.
- Students will demonstrate an understanding of the diverse views that surround each of the bills chosen.
- Students will learn the art of crafting a well-thought-out and logical persuasive statement that will convey their views.
Module #8: Culture
- Students will differentiate the concept of culture from race and ethnicity.
- Students will explore Latino/Hispanic culture and the rich diversity among those who consider themselves Latino in America.
- Students will explore the implications of pop-culture and the media in developing cultural identity.
- Students will discuss the influences that gender roles have in cultural identity.
Module #9: Identifying Community Issues and Knowing Your Representatives: Local to National
- Students will identify and examine problems and concerns in their neighborhoods and the national/global scene.
- Students will identify, analyze, and assess the problems and issues in their communities.
- Students will research the perceived “issues” identified and formulate a presentation to inform themselves and others.
- Students will write a plan of action to present these “issues” and their recommendations to their elected representatives. This may include scheduled meetings during the Institute.
Module #10: Writing a Winning Scholarship Essay for PR/HYLI and Beyond
- Students will be taught the vital ingredients of a successful scholarship essay.
- Students will be given information about sources of funding for higher education, particularly for Hispanics.
Module #11: Debating/Forensics and Party Affiliations
- Students will align themselves with party ‘views’ and arguments while developing strategic talking points for debate.
Module #12: Understanding Specialty Roles and Practice Sessions
- Students develop an understanding of the roles of an Assembly Member and the responsibilities of the “Specialty Roles” for the PR/HYLI’s Mock Assembly session.
- Students will analyze their roles as a member of the NYS Assembly and act accordingly to the Specialty Role assigned to them for practice.
Module #13: Decorum for PR/HYLI Weekend
- Students will be given information about the expected decorum for the PR/HYLI weekend.
- Students will become familiar with the Rules of Conduct and sign a student contract.
